August…Where Did You Go?

August 2015 2

  • August arrived, the incessant rain stopped, and it finally felt like Summer exploded with more humidity than normal.
  • By the time August arrived, my flower bed was more of a weed bed than flowers. I finally just pulled the weeds and not many flowers left that hadn’t been strangled by the weeds.
  • We sadly had been trying to sell our place at the lake kind of on and off since last Summer. Finally, someone wanted to buy it. With mixed emotions, we said good-bye to a past era of fun.
  • My outdoor furniture chairs were a mess, I recovered them as well as the swing canopy.
  • The grandbabykins kept me company some, but not as much as usual this Summer, but when he is here, it’s always a fun day. His mama’s work and school schedule was lighter than normal this Summer so he got to hang our more at home. I miss him, but glad he and his mom had the Summer months. Then too soon, school started back the 2nd week of August.
  • The grandbabykins had his birthday party at a gym where all the kids could zipline, walk tightrope, climb, etc. The picture is of he and his mama getting ready to climb. He loved having her climb too.
  • I miss getting out more with my camera, but did manage some pictures of the weeds. 🙂
  • Still enthused with my reading through the Bible. It was Song of Solomon for August. Next will be Acts.

Sharing my collage over at Mona’s Picturesque. Make a collage of your August and head on over and share at her page. Fun to see how others spent their month. Enjoy!!

Milkweed and Weeds

Milkweed & Weeds in Green clip mask

Where we live use to be my hubby’s step-grandfather’s farmland, and when we decided to buy our house, hubby wanted to move on this land that he use to help farm as a teenager. It’s rural, and there were only 9 houses on the road at the time. Over the years we’ve lived here and raised our children, there has only been one house added and that was just recently. It is flat farmland all around us. We didn’t think much of it that there was an auction house right beside us owned by a local family and had been for years. That was fine, and the auctions were only on some Friday nights so it really wasn’t that big of a deal…….that is until they decided to sell. We assumed that whoever purchased it would just take over their business. Not the case. Without going into much detail, I can only say it has not been the best of years. Actually, they purchased it and pretty much just trashed the building and the land. Eventually, they didn’t pay their taxes and it went to sheriff sale. We were hopeful since it was a local business owner in our bigger town that made the purchase. Not the case. That was three years ago, and they have done nothing except let the critters run wild. We’ve actually never seen the new owners.  No mowing, etc., which gets me to my post.

The only blessing in the weed field that I live beside is the Milkweed. It sprouted a couple summer’s ago in what is slowing becoming a forest over there. So, at least the butterflies may come again (and I have seen a few this summer so far). Hence, my photos of the milkweed and weeds next door. 🙂 Also, sometimes weeds can be pretty flowers too…if you stop and really take a look.

Sometimes Editing Not Needed?

Sometimes weeds can make fun photos, and I just didn’t think editing was needed for these….chime in if you think different.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

And sometimes it does need editing.

Below is shared with Texture Tuesday (edited with kk_Wednesday and then overlayed with a photo of leaves for color)

Such beautiful days so far this Fall, we are having. This time of year gets me in the mood for clearing out and cleaning up, and I really have to resist the urge to just pitch everything in this house instead. 🙂 It’s also the time of year that we find different insects trying to invade living space. Today was a day for moving out and sweeping behind all furniture, etc. to deal with insects. Even though we live out in the rural area (we’re not too far from a really small town though), we’ve always been lucky to not get surprised by too many invaders except when it turns a bit cooler in the Fall. Then we get a few insects passing through. Depending on what they are, I will try to rescue and put back out into their domain, but there are some that just don’t make it. Sorry.

Anyway, after the moving and sweeping behind and spraying, it was just too pretty to not take a bit of time outside with the camera. The flowers aren’t looking that great, but the weeds are flourishing so I took a walk down the road with camera in hand. The weeds reminded me of how we as humans, even in the depth of some despair always seem to find a way to bounce back and are determined to persevere against all odds. Kind of like the weeds that fill the edges of the road, edges of the farmer’s fields, and even among my flower garden. Some weeds will hang on throughout some of the frost, some of the worst storms of winter, and will find a way to awaken next Spring.

So, I guess if I had to choose between being a fragile flower or the weed that can withstand many odds, I’d have to choose a weed. However, I would prefer to be one of the good looking weeds. hahahaha Which would you choose to be?

Some pictures below from my Fall weed~walk today. ~smiles ‘n giggles~

Oh, and also on my weed-walk, I noticed that a few leaves are dropping from our tree and the beginning of the color change has started.

Personally, I’d take Fall weather like today year round. We had a splash of rain this a.m., but then it was over and the day was sunshiny with wispy clouds and a gorgeous blue sky. The farmers are clearing the fields and I noticed the beans are gone, and the one thing I don’t like is the smell from all the manure (or whatever it is) spreading on the fields.

Happy 1st Day of October and Tuesday!!

Milkweed

milkweed for TT n RJ

Another from my ‘Weeds’ photos. Wasn’t sure what this was so I googled it, and found that it is Milkweed.  Seems it’s important for Monarch Butterflies, Hummingbirds, and other species. I know when I was taking this, the bees were loving this weed/plant.

If interested in knowing more about the Milkweed, I found some info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asclepias and here: http://www.butterflybushes.com/milkweed.htm

On my photo, I started with one of Nancy’s textures as the background and added my photo on top with soft light overlay. I then applied the Dreamy technique that I’d seen in Kim’s tutorial on how to make your photo look dreamy. I didn’t do all the steps, and I don’t think mine turned out like hers. I then embedded a bird on a branch clip art from The Graphics Fairy, added a butterfly and a bee brush. Lastly, I applied kk_touchoftexture.

WEIRD

weird but interesting weed

Another of my ‘Weeds’ photos

I have no idea what weed this is, and since I don’t know my weeds or plants very well, I wonder if this is one that might be or has been used as an herb or for medicinal purposes in years past. Looks like tiny green pumpkins growing on it. And, the stem is kind of a creamy yellow color.

When I see a field of weeds and wild flowers, it brings to mind the many books that I’ve read that has the woman living back in the woods that everyone went to in the prairie days for medicine. One such book that is very good is The Frontiersman’s Daughter by Laura Frantz

Berries ‘n Nature

Berries 'n Nature

Another from my ‘WEEDS’ photos. Edited with Adobe CS5.

There are so many free things in life..Nature being one of them even if it’s only in an edited photo. Every day there is something beautiful to see just by being aware of the color that is around us. The birds are go getters; up early and busy taking care of themselves and their families. They even fight at times over who found the worm first.

The Butterflies share their beautiful colors as they flit about and seems at times they flit close enough to tease just so we can admire their abstract wings that look like an artist’s finest work. (it is)

I’ve always been such a people watcher. I know it’s impolite to stare, but I’ve never been able not to because we are each such beautiful beings in our own way. When you see a person, do you wonder what they are about? What there life is? How things are going for them? Do they have stresses that don’t show on their faces? Is the smile genuine ~ are they truly happy? When staring at people, I wish all good things for them. We are such intricate, amazing, people just like birds and the butterflies.

When enjoying Nature, there is nothing more soothing than the sound of a bird warbling with trills and melody. There is even something soothing about the cicadas in the evening. And the fireflies doing their magical show has delighted children and adult alike for years.

Among the busy weeds of life, entertainment can be found just by looking.

Thistle

Thistle Deceiving

Since it’s been so dry lately, the weeds are taking over so decided to do a ‘WEEDS’ photo shoot. I had allowed this thistle to become way to tall, but when I saw it was beginning to have blooms thought ‘why not?’ let it go. Now the photo is taken, I can cut it back. These are not my favorite because if you touch them without protection, it is hard to remove those minuscule little fibers. If they’re good for something, I wonder. The bloom is the prettiest lavender color though.

It kind of reminded me of the quote ‘Pretty Is As Pretty Does’ only I was thinking ‘Pretty Isn’t As Pretty Does’ because these can be hurtful.

To the original photo, I applied Nancy Claes NC220 and then Kim Klassen’s KK_May and changed the green Hue.
